I agree with "Zibo" post above.
Running linux/unix does not automatically make your machine more secure. Yes, Unix is design with security in mind, but, most of the security weaknesses are from the users. For example, poor password, using admin account to connect to internet etc...
Windows get more virus becasuse it is more popular.
If linux ever get popular as windows is, linux will be on the same boat.
If you want to try out linux, you can download some of the linux live CD and try them out. I believe someone may have very good suggestion for you. I personally use slax (based on slackware linux). You do not have to install anything, just boot your computer with the live CD and following instructions.

f

Unix (Red hat, Sun OS), windows (XP/2k) at work.
Slackware linux, occationally win98 (I know it sucks but you never know when you need to run some windows only program), at home.

f

At work: circuit simulation program, open office, firefox, xv, ...
At home: Xine, mplayer, lame, audacity, gimp ...

f

One thing you could do to isolate the problem is to boot your laptop with a linux live cd and see if the sounds works.
You can download one form http://slax.linux-live.org/download.php
Just download the standard edition and try. The os is self contain in the cd so you are not require to install anything. Just follow instructions after the cd boot.
If the sound works with the linux cd, then there is some problem with your windows setup/installation. If the sound also doesn't work with the live cd, then, its most likely hardware probem.
Since you said you hear faint static with the headphone, the headphone jack should be ok.
How long you own the laptop? It is possible that some capacitor has gone bad and cause the audio output of the sound card stop functioning. However, I maybe wrong about the capacitor probem.

I assume you are a window user since the drive is "x:"
Which window s you are using? Are you using xp/win2k?
Even if you use winxp/win2k, some device still requie you to install the USB driver before you can use them. It sucks but its windows.
You can use google t fine the driver. I try it and most web page are chinese. So if you can't read chinese, sorry.
If this is not the first time you use the player, it very likely the usb cable has gone bad or the connector gone bad.
Sorry if the above didn't help.
BTW, you can check the usb port by using a flash drive (usb key).

Quote by skottichanI'm sorry gys, but seriously, ISO's are overrated. Everyone goes out of
their way to point out the flaws od Windows and how evil BIll Gates it.
Why is Bill evil, cus he's successful? People in the lunatic fringe
seem to hate those with more sucess than themselves. I've tried linux,
several flavors even, it's just not worth all the work to set up, or to
manipulate to get software to run. I'm an artist, not a programmer, I
wanna spend more time with my art thank you. WinXP has been stable and
fast. I'm just baffled as to why people have to "clean up" their
registries?

Bascially, I totally agree with you about using an OS. Average people just want to buy a computer, push the power botton and enjoy. Lunix is not for everyday user yet due to little commercial software support.
Aside for the setup issues, people need to learn how to properly use a computer. As you have said, you have to learn how to clean up registry, properly set your file permitions, etc for windows. Basically, the steps involes are similar in linux/unix. side

Some people like me switch to linux/unix not becase we hate Bill Gate. It is the EULA that drove us away. I am very happly with WIN2k but since SP3, you have to agree to let MS scan your hd without your consen. Also, I do not like the idea of ativation. Why you have to ask for permition to use something that you buy. I know that Ms already simpify the activation process alot. But I still do not like it.

Quote by chaoDid anyone go to Gentoo???
Uhm, i think this' a best distro. 4 or 6 CD, it takes a long time to set up and u have it ^_^

I have try it. and like it a lot. Gentoo protage system bascially simplify how you install software on a linux machine. The onlyproblem I have with protage is I don't have high speed internal connection. So, if the cd do not contain the software I need, I have no way to take advantage of the protage system. So, I switch back to slackware.

Slaxkware 10 for me. I used to be a windows user, win95, win98, win2k. After so many crashes with win95 and win98 I switched to win2k and become a happy user for a while. However, I doesn't like the ELSA of sp3 and up for win2k so decided to switch to unix.

I have try several favors of linux, rad head, debain, slackware and freebsd, and I like slackware the mostest. I like simple destop so I use xface window manager.

I also find the linux life cd very handy. I am currently using slax (based on slackware) live cd.

I agree with jim3535. A lot of people think that they are saved if they touch the metal case with the power cord unplugged.

A friend of my kill all of the ram (he only got one stick) when he take the ram out while his computer is unplug.

Also, some ESD pre-causion is good since repleat ESD zap on a devices will cause that device fail over time.

I remember one time we have to debug a chip that has ESD issue. The ESD group of the customer send back a part that fail the ESD test. I look under the microscope and found out that a big part of the silicon near the ESD cell are gone. So, you can imagine how much damage that little zap can do to a piece of silicon.

Usually, a part installed on a big systems like a motherboard are less likely to be damage by ESD since there are many parts to share the charge so the energy is kind of spread out. But, a little more causion is better than sorry.

f

I don't like wearing headphone to listen to music.
The only time I wear headphone is using the handfree headset with my cell phone.

f

I am a boring type and I like to start with a blank page.
Most of the people I know use google page. So what's yours?

f

Netscape7/Mozilla (sometimes IE) at work and Firefox at home.
I hate IE but the flash plugin for Netscape7 in Solaris just don't work together..
SoI have to use IE to view the online training.

f

I understand why you worry so much after knowing that you have a 9600 Radeon.
Yes, a 300W no name PS seems little weak for what you planning to do, especially
the UV light, they are very tough load to drive.

Sorry I cannot add much to your problem.

You might want to check out

A guy call my cell phone and said "What's up man!" , as soon as he hear my voice......he know he dial a wrong number and hang up.

f

My old system have 2 120G WD SEand 1 20G maxter.
The system I have right now have 1 160G WD.

f

I used to have the followig setup:
3 case fans, 2WD 120G 8M, 120G maxter and 450W PS.

Don't worry about the power drawn by the case fan, the only consume a few watts total.
Compare the current rating of your fan and that of the HD and you will know what I mean.

I hate history too!!!

f

Sorry to hear that Frosty.

Yep, IBM used to be the top player in HD until the "death" Star series.
I have read a very long discussion somewhere of how people being screw by IBM "death" Star.
After a lot of complains and returns, IBM actually claim that those HDs is not for 7/24 use.

I never own an IBM HD, my first computer(a dell) had a Maxtor HDin it. It's extrememly loud.
The latest HD I have is a WD.

It sound like if you're a "death" Star owner, raid1 array is a must.

f

Kirtai,I totally argee with you that one can build a working water cool system for les.
I have read someone in a overclocking forum doing exectly what you described.
The idea of using an old radiator is also very popular amount audio amplifier builders - most of them build multi-kilo Watt amplifier.

f

Oh, I remember I read somewhere people talk about how they choose their password and one guy said that he almost went up to the roof when his girl friend tell him her password for her winxp account is "acb123".

f

I know what you guys mean..............calisqo, jackalx66.......been there.
That's why I like to hang out with my friends to enjoy city life when I was in high school.

Maybe after I come to US, the freedom of no nagging from my mom, except when I talk to her on the phone, change my thought........

f

One of my manager he develope a way to decode his password and he say it works well for him. He work for 15 yeas in 4 different companies.
I wish I can come up with a good scheme so that I don't have to pull my hear off my head to come up with all those password every 3 months. Lucky, I still have prenty of them attached on my head.............

f

I have a XP 2000+ and I am using the stock heatsink. However, I need to use a 90mm case fan because the original fan is just too noisy for what I needed for my computer.
